An Aspirin a Day Keeps the (Breast Cancer) Doctor Away?
We’ve been conditioned to hearing ads on television that describe how aspirin helps the heart. But now, a report recently published in BioMed Central's open access journal Breast Cancer Research suggests that it might have beneficial effects on certain members of the breast cancer community, too. In a study that included 127,000 women ages 51-72 with no history of cancer, it was found that aspirin use was linked to a small reduction in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. However, unlike in some previous research, aspirin and related painkillers were not found to reduce the total risk of breast cancer.
As you probably know, estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer is about the most common form of breast cancer; it represents about 75% of all breast cancers. An ER+ breast cancer means that estrogen helps the cancer cells grow, so drugs like tamoxifen that block the action of estrogen are often used to treat ER+ cancer.
The study found that it is feasible, at least in theory, that aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could lower the total risk of breast cancer since they block a certain enzyme that could reduce the amount of estrogen produced in the body. While NSAID use was not linked to the reduction in total risk of breast cancer in this study, the team did observe that daily aspirin use was associated with a small reduction (16%) in the risk of ER+ breast cancers only.
The lead researcher cautions that these findings are preliminary evidence but evidence strong enough to provide support for further evaluating relationships in other studies. Naturally, never do anything, even something as small as taking an aspirin, without consulting your doctor first. But I'm encouraged and gratified and thankful for the research that is going on in the labs around the world that looks at ways, including something as simple as taking an aspirin, of reducing our risk of breast cancer.
